The Porsche models at a glance. 911 success story
The Porsche 911 Carrera is the most important vehicle in the model range of Dr. Ing. h.c. F Porsche AG, it is the all-important key to the success of the sports car manufacturer.
The latest generation of the 911 celebrated its world premiere at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt (IAA) in 1993. With the greatest development to date in the more than 30-year history of the 911, Porsche managed to build directly on this tradition. The international response to the new sports car is overwhelming and is reflected in a series of awards. The readers of the magazine "auto motor und sport" voted the 911 Carrera "Sports Car of the Year" for the 19th time in a row in the "Best Cars of 1995" poll. The readers of the sports magazine "sport auto" voted the 911 the "sportiest car of 1994". In the Italian car magazine "Quattroroute"'s poll, the 911 Carrera won the "My Favorite Car" category ahead of all other foreign sports cars, and in England the 911 won the "High Performance Car of the Year" award from the trade magazine "Auto Express" for two years in a row. The awards for the design of the 911 are similarly varied. The 911 was the only car to receive the coveted "Award for Excellent Design" from the Hanover Design Industry Forum in a wide range of design goods. The Design Center of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded it the "Award for High Design: Quality".
911 Carrera
The new 911 Carrera boasts a number of groundbreaking technologies. The chassis, with its completely redesigned multi-link rear axle with LSA system (stands for lightweight construction, stability and agility) and the revised front axle, offers significantly increased driving safety. At the same time, the new chassis also significantly improves handling characteristics and driving comfort. Another highlight in the 911 Carrera is the anti-lock braking system "ABS 5", whose optimized control programming has made it possible to surpass the very good braking performance of its predecessor. The 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, which has been fundamentally revised in terms of mechanics and electronics, was designed to be particularly easy to maintain, especially thanks to the hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The 200 kW (272 hp) engine with the double-pipe exhaust system and two independent metal catalysts is characterized by its extremely smooth running and maximum torque of 330 Nm at 5000 rpm. The newly developed six-speed transmission has been adapted to the increased engine power.
The Porsche 911 attracts attention with its powerful, dynamic and at the same time harmonious and elegant design. The current shape was created taking into account the latest findings in safety, economy and the latest production processes.
911 Carrera Cabriolet
The new Porsche has been available since March 1994 911 Carrera also as a convertible, which offers a new dimension of open-top driving. The 911 Cabriolet is equipped with an exclusive feature: an optional fully automatic wind deflector that automatically opens when the top is opened. The top has been optimized so that it remains dimensionally stable even at the top speed of 270 kilometers per hour.
Demand for the open 911 Carrera is around 40 percent.
911 Carrera Tiptronic S
In the summer of 1994, Porsche presented the 911 Carrera variant Tiptronic S. In response to today's traffic density, Porsche engineers have developed a transmission with a shifting philosophy that meets all requirements. As an alternative to automatic operation with active electronic control of the shifting characteristics, manual gear changes are also possible from the steering wheel using a rocker switch. This modern relief for the driver offers the best economic conditions. On the other hand, the exceptional driving dynamics of a high-performance sports car can be optimally implemented - whether automatically or manually.
Thanks to this additional, attractive feature, the Tiptronic S share of the 911 Carrera is now around 30 percent - varying from country to country.
911 Carrera 4
The 911 Carrera 4, presented in late summer 1994, offers high-tech with little additional weight, and even with all-wheel drive it conveys the agile driving behavior typical of the rear-wheel drive car. In addition, it offers superior driving dynamics with enormous traction advantages on wet or slippery roads. The Carrera 4 is characterized by an exceptionally high level of driving stability as well as handling and usage characteristics, which the driver immediately notices.
Depending on the country, up to 40 percent of all 911 customers are already opting for this all-wheel drive system with superior driving dynamics and maximum traction.
911 Carrera RS
The new 911 Carrera RS celebrated its world premiere at the Amsterdam Motor Show on January 31st. The first vehicles will be delivered to customers in May 1995.
The engineers have succeeded in creating a particularly harmonious synthesis of sportiness and comfort requirements in the new Carrera RS. The extremely sporty, tough character of its predecessor was dispensed with. Nevertheless, the racing design remained unaffected. In return, the everyday suitability of the new RS was significantly improved. Like its legendary predecessors, the vehicle is relatively light, as comfort elements were dispensed with, and offers enormous performance with 221 kW (300 hp).
Porsche is building the 1000 units required for homologation in the national N/GT group - but a maximum of around 1200 units in total.
The special version of the 911 Carrera RS, called "Clubsport", is the basis for active mass sport. This version is also available with road approval in most countries and has been available since January 1995. The 100 units required for homologation in international racing (FIA GT2) are planned.
911 Turbo
The new 911 Turbo - the top model in the 911 series - made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1995. With its 300 kW (408 hp) biturbo engine and all-wheel drive, it is a car that leaves nothing to be desired. The Turbo represents a new generation of high-performance sports cars, which have a performance potential that is not limited to exceptional figures alone. The all-wheel drive Turbo combines maximum agility with optimal driving behavior and problem-free everyday usability thanks to innovative technology. Two particularly outstanding features are the permanent exhaust gas monitoring system "On-Board Diagnosis II" and the hollow-spoke rims. The active and passive safety standards and the measures to reduce pollutants are also exemplary. Its striking design is striking, but not intrusive.
Months before the new 911 Turbo rolled onto the international markets in April 1995, numerous pre-orders were registered.
968/968 CS
The number 968 is more than just a symbol. In sports cars in the mid-price segment, it stands for Porsche identity, for the latest engine technology (VarioCam camshaft control) and for a new power transmission concept (transaxle) combined with high environmental compatibility.
The 968 CS proved to be a particularly successful variant with its clear commitment to sportiness. The English specialist magazine Autocar & Motor unanimously voted the 968 Club Sport "best vehicle of the year". The specialist magazine "Performance Car" also honored the CS. The test drivers of the car magazine voted the sporty 968 the "top vehicle of the year".
Porsche will build as many 968 vehicles until the parts already in stock at the factory are used up, with the target markets for this sports car being primarily the USA and Great Britain.
928 GTS
After 18 years of production, the Porsche 928 GTS still meets the highest standards of comfort and performance. Its silhouette has always signaled the superior touring sports car, a characteristic Gran Turismo. The performance sovereignty of the current generation is expressed in the maximum torque of the powerful V8 of 500 Nm. 257 KW (350 HP) guarantee the truly superior form of locomotion. The basic concept of the body in lightweight construction (high aluminum content) and the track-correcting rear axle were groundbreaking.
As many vehicles of the type 928 GTS will also be built until the parts stored in the factory are used up. The Gran Turismo will be sold mainly in Europe.
