2004: PORSCHE® DRIVING EXPERIENCE ESTABLISHES NEW HOME BASE

Barber Motorsports Park provides a dynamic showcase for Porsche 911® and Cayenne® vehicles and drivers

ATLANTA – The Porsche Driving Experience has a new home. The program that uses well-known professional race drivers to teach Porsche owners performance, accident avoidance and safe driving techniques has moved to the new Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala.

The Porsche Driving Experience was launched in 2000 at the Road Atlanta and Sebring, Fla., tracks, where the Porsche 911 Carrera® Coupe served as the school car. Since its inception, thousands of enthusiasts have participated in the Porsche Driving Experience. But, increased demand for track time and the introduction of Porsche’s sport utility vehicle, the Cayenne, created a need for a new, dedicated home for such specialized instructional activities.

Barber Motorsports Park is a 740-acre facility that opened in the spring of 2003. It is located just a mile off I-20, some 15 minutes from downtown Birmingham and 10 minutes from Birmingham International Airport. The track features a 16-turn, 2.3-mile road course that is 45 feet wide and offers 80-feet in elevation change, as well as off-pavement driving opportunities.

“The Barber Motorsports Park gives Porsche Cars North America the opportunity to start with a fresh face at an exclusive track that is second to none,” said Le Mans and Daytona-winning driver Hurley Haywood. “We all know that our business is based on emotion, and the Birmingham track is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and demanding facilities in North America.”

Haywood and other professional drivers such as Doc Bundy, Pierre Savoy, Jeff Purner, Dave Murry, Jack Baldwin and Bill Adam conduct the program. Due to a low 5:1 participant-to-instructor ratio, the drivers are able to offer hands-on, personal instruction.

“We’ve taken careful measures to be certain the park exceeds the industry’s safety standards and is an environmentally friendly and economic contribution to Birmingham,” said Jeff Ray, executive director of Barber Motorsports Park.

Barber Motorsports Park is also the home of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, which is considered the world’s most extensive private motorcycle collection.

While in Birmingham, Porsche Driving Experience participants can select from a number of lifestyle packages associated with Porsche Driving Experience’s preferred hotel, the Wynfrey. The award-winning hotel is Alabama’s only AAA Four-Diamond Hotel and has received this coveted award for 16 consecutive years as well as the Pinnacle Award for the past five years.

The Porsche Driving Experience recently expanded its offerings to include a “masters” program designed for those who have been through the initial program. The masters program offers participants more track time and advanced instruction.
