NEW TARGETS WITH THE CART-PORSCHE
After over thirty years of endurance racing, in which Porsche has repeated the greatest successes such as world championship titles or Le Mans victories several times, there is now a new sporting heavyweight: the involvement in the American CART series (Championship Auto Racing Teams) requires the full attention of the factory racing department is for the near future. For Porsche, the 1988 season was exclusively a year of development, learning and getting used to.
At the beginning of the new year, the project entered the competition phase. In the first year in the CART series, Porsche and driver Teo Fabi worked their way up to the first third of the field step by step and finished 10th after 15 races of the season. The team placed in the top ten nine times and had notable successes such as a third starting place in Meadowlands. At the 200 mile race in Nazareth, Fabi temporarily led the field and finally came fourth.
In 1989 Porsche wants to catch up with the leading competitors. For this purpose, a new vehicle is being created in close cooperation between Porsche and March. At the same time, additional horsepower is to be extracted from the water-cooled 2.65 liter V8 turbo engine over the winter months in the Porsche Development Center in Weissach in order to make the Quaker State Porsche fully competitive.
The 1989 CART season will begin for the first time on March 26th in Fuji (Japan). Then with Derrick Walker (43) a new team manager will lead the Quaker State Porsche team. Walker, who is one of the most experienced in the CART business, reports directly to Porsche head of research and CART project manager Helmut Flegl.
The Indy-Porsche will again be driven by the Italian Teo Fabi, who has confirmed himself to be a fast, faultless racing driver and an excellent test driver.
