Driving in its purest Form
Over the past six decades, Porsche has consistently been a significant contributor to automotive history, and cars designed and built by Porsche have become famous throughout the world. From the beginning, and through three generations of Porsche, the objective has been clear: To create automobiles of a very special kind.
The current Porsche models 911 and 912 are fine examples of this continued creative effort. They uphold the Porsche tradition of designing and constructing automobiles as harmonious, self-contained units. Each separate element - engine, transmission, suspension, monocoque chassis and body - is a functional part contributing the unity of the whole. Nothing is "tacked on". Even the smallest piece or assembly is integrally designed to make the Porsche one of the finest cars in the world today.
The Porsche provides what all automobile enthusiasts desire: The pleasure and satisfaction of driving, in its purest form!
The success of the House of Porsche, one of the smallest European automotive manufacturers, derives largely from the legendary personality and genius of the late Prof. Ferdinand Porsche. His greatest werk, in a lifetime devoted to the design and construction of automobiles, became the car to which he gave his name. Dr. Porsche's ideas and the principles he established have been vital to the creation of all Porsche motor cars, including the present series.
For a great many years, the House of Porsche has been the Mecca for the most capable designers, engineers and racing drivers of Europe. No effort is spared to provide them with every opportunity to design and werk creatively. At Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, we're always searching for technical perfection and the ultimate in functional design.
A basic ingredient in the Porsche philosophy is the belief that only in the severe conditions of racing can cars be adequately tested for technical performance and overall proficiency. Controlled test-stand conditions cannot provide the rigorous stresses and strains needed to prove the durability of a motor car. The vast experience accumulated by Porsche in years of successful racing competition is constantly applied in the design and engineering of our standard production models.
The new models 911 /912 incorporate many improved design features. Window area has been increased to provide greater all-around visibility with no blind spots. Through redesign of the front axle and suspension, the front luggage compartment has been enlarged to provide more storage space, with the spare wheel positioned horizontally and the entire area covered with luxurious carpeting. Additional luggage space is available by folding down the rear seat backs. The wheelbase has been extended by a few inches to provide a roomier cockpit and greater comfort for all passengers.
The interior of the Porsche is designed throughout to make DRIVING a truly great experience. The windows provide exceptional visibility. The comfortable, fully reclining seats have been engineered to give complete body support, without fatigue, for extended driving periods. Seat rails and back-rest guides have been enlarged so that the driver, regardless of size, is comfortably seated, secure and in complete control of the car. The steering column positions the wheel comfortably and correctly in the driver's hands.
Directly and easily in view of the driver are the five instruments, grouped in a shielded, non-glare cowl to provide the necessary operational information at a glance. Two levers on the steering column offer finger-tip control of turn signals, headlight dimmer, flash signal, windshield washer and 3-speed wiper. Safety windshield glass and the sectioned steering column give passenger and driver additional protection against possible collision impact.
The dashboard comprises five instruments arranged directly in front of the driver for instant viewing. In order to avoid a reflection in the windshield, they are provided with a cowl. Two levers on the steering column actuate the high and low beam, headlamp flasher and turn signals as well as the 3-speed windshield wipers. The padded dashboard offers - together with the collapsible steering column and the laminated safety-glass windshield - a real contribution to interior safety. The famous Porsche seats, long rated as among the finest in the industry have been further improved with both the seat and back widened for greater body comfort. The fore and aft slide adjustment and the multiple positioning of the tilting mechanism for the backrest, make "ride-fatigue" completely unknown to Porsche drivers.
The Porsche car is ENGINEERED to enable the driver to perform the DRIVING function expertly and SAFELY. Following are listed some 42 engineering and construction features that make the Porsche one of the SAFEST cars on the road.
