In early 1984, a special homologation series of 20 Porsche 911 SC RS vehicles is delivered to private customers with an interest in motor sports.
At the Frankfurt IAA in 1983, together with the new MY 1984 production models, Porsche presents a very special high-performance vehicle: the “Group B” study. Designed as a competition vehicle for long-distance races, the body of the prototype is characterised by soft lines and curves which will also make an appearance in later 911 generations. The series-production version of the “Group B” study (the Porsche 959) causes a global sensation from 1985 onwards.
As in the previous two years, the 956 is once again the pre-eminent long-distance racing car, and achieves yet another victory for Porsche at the International Championship for Makes. Although no works team competes in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the top of the table is filled by seven privately owned Porsche 956 vehicles. The victory of a Porsche 911 Carrera 4x4 at the Paris-Dakar Rally is another pleasant surprise. The all-wheel-drive prototype, painted in the colours of Rothmans as sponsor, is driven by René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne.
