1991: Porsche services from A to Z
Loosely translated from the original german
Foreword
If you focus your energy entirely on one area, you can naturally be particularly strong in that area. Porsche has concentrated on developing high-quality sports cars since the beginning of its company history. And with this aim in mind, it has built cars that represent the highest level of performance, perfection and aesthetics, which have set the trend for entire generations of cars. The new Porsche 911 Carrera has embodied this high standard for 27 years now. And every year with new freshness.
The same goes for the Porsche 928, which became the model for an entire generation of sports cars and is even more impressive as the 928 GTS.
The new Porsche 968 fits seamlessly into the Porsche family because it speaks the same design language and offers the same perfect technology.
All three series present a multitude of new ideas and demonstrate once again that Porsche, as a pure sports car manufacturer, is always good for innovative surprises.
Best regards,
Yours, F.A. Porsche
Driving at its best can be experienced in three very different ways: in the Porsche 968, in the Porsche 911 and in the Porsche 928. Each model series has its own charm, each embodies the high Porsche standards of technology and aesthetics in a completely unique way. And with each one you can experience the Porsche fascination in a different way. Which Porsche you ultimately choose is a question of personality. We want to help you make the right decision on the following pages.
The Porsche 911 Carrera with its 6-cylinder boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and unmistakable silhouette is a real automobile classic. And for many, the most beautiful way to drive a Porsche. All that remains is to choose between the Carrera 2 and the Carrera 4 with dynamic all-wheel technology. Or the Porsche 911 Turbo.
A sports car that combines everything that is sensible and desirable according to the current state of technology. And its typical Porsche design features signal at first glance that it belongs to the Porsche family. Exciting technology, packed into an equally exciting body, which is available as a coupe and a convertible - never before has the choice been so difficult.
The eight-cylinder Porsche proves that high-performance sport and representative elegance do not have to be a contradiction. It is not for nothing that this sports car is one of the fastest, safest and most comfortable cars in the world, and gives its driver a unique driving experience that is difficult to describe. Superior strength in every situation, combined with the highest level of aesthetics and comfort, secure the Porsche 928 GTS its preferred position within the sports car elite.
In the beginning there was the idea of a better car. A sports car without compromises, which combines everything that is sensible and desirable according to today's state of the art. Porsche has made this idea a reality. The result is called the Porsche 968 and is the most current interpretation of the term sports car.
The Porsche 968 has a number of typical Porsche design features. For example, the closed vehicle shape with the visible round headlights, the classic, newly interpreted fender arches and the strongly arrowed, downward-swept hood is unmistakable. The striking 16-inch wheels and the rear spoiler also reflect Porsche tradition and aesthetics.
The Porsche 968 is powered by the world's most powerful three-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. It accelerates seemingly effortlessly from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds - and that in the first two gears! It achieves this enormous performance with extremely little fuel: just 10l/100 km/h in a third of a litre. A highly developed metal catalyst ensures that sportiness does not come at the expense of the environment. To ensure that the Porsche 968's superior performance is fully on the road, Porsche has given it a finely tuned chassis in transaxle design. It ensures balanced handling and, in conjunction with the high-performance braking system and ABS, safety reserves for sporty driving.
Whether you prefer to drive with the top down or prefer a coupé, whether you want to drive your Porsche 968 with the new, uncompromisingly designed six-speed sports transmission or enjoy the benefits of the innovative Tiptronic, four different combinations give you the freedom to choose. In the interior, all four model variants are the same: with airbags for the driver and front passenger in all series models and equipment that leaves nothing to be desired.
With its 6-cylinder boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and unmistakable silhouette, the Porsche 911 Carrera is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive automotive personalities of our time. And has been for 27 years. Constant development has ensured that it is always at the cutting edge of technology.
The Carrera 4 sets a new high point in 911 history with dynamic all-wheel control, which automatically reacts correctly to every change of direction and every influence on the road.
In the Carrera 4, the all-wheel drive normally distributes 31 percent of the drive power to the front axle and 69 percent to the rear axle. If slippage occurs on the individual wheels, it is detected in a flash by intelligent electronics and prevented by hydraulically controlled locks.
The drive power is redistributed to the individual wheels so that it is fully applied to the road again. This noticeably improves the steering behavior, directional stability and traction of the Carrera 4, especially in curves and on wet or icy roads.
Porsche has always demonstrated its innovative edge not only with higher engine performance, but also with more active safety. This includes a high-performance chassis that confidently transfers the power of the six-cylinder engine to the road. And it also includes a braking system that has emerged as the winner in many tests. Here, the 911 Carrera benefits from Porsche's decades of racing experience.
A Porsche 911 Carrera is inseparable from the fun of driving, the direct contact with the road, that indescribable feeling of being one with your car. In every driving situation.
With the Porsche Carrera, you can enjoy this driving experience in three different body versions: as a coupe, targa or cabriolet. In any case, you are opting for a thoroughbred sports car that not only your heart says yes to, but also your mind. Porsche has therefore given the 911 a number of sensible innovations that are always linked to increased safety and environmental compatibility.
The aerodynamics were also improved along with the design. With a rounded bumper, integrated bumpers and a smooth, defined underbody.
The legendary 3.6-liter boxer engine has been continuously developed and now produces 184 kW (250 hp) at 6100 rpm. And in a clean way: an advanced metal catalyst keeps pollutant emissions as low as possible. The Porsche Tiptronic guarantees economical, safe driving, allowing you to fully concentrate on the road. And last but not least, Porsche was the first car manufacturer in the world to equip all series models with airbags for the driver and front passenger.
An attractive form of environmental protection and better than any recycling is the durability of our sports cars. Porsche offers a 10-year guarantee against rust on every vehicle for the body, which is hot-dip galvanized on both sides, and a 3-year guarantee for the paintwork. This is certainly one of the reasons why 2 out of 3 cars built since 1948 are still on the road today. In this sense, a Porsche 911 is not a luxury. It is one of the few purchases that combine common sense and pleasure in equal measure.
For Porsche, strength does not simply mean more engine power, but is also increasingly evident in other areas: whether it is environmental protection or new technologies for safety. Because we not only have the philosophy of a better car, but also the necessary technology to make it a reality.
Porsche is the first car manufacturer in Germany to equip all series models with airbags for driver and passenger, the inflatable air cushion that is activated within fractions of a second in the event of a frontal collision and can save lives.
The Porsche Tiptronic is the better transmission not only in terms of safety, but also in terms of comfort. Because it is a comfortable automatic or a sporty manual transmission, just as you wish.
In the automatic selection level, an intelligent shift program with 5 shift characteristics takes over the shifting. Adapted to every driving style, from economical to extremely sporty.
In the manual selection level, the Tiptronic is the most modern sports transmission currently available. A light touch of the selector lever and the four gears can be shifted in a completely new way. Faster, more direct, simpler.
There is no need to use the clutch here either, because Tiptronic shifts under load, i.e. without interrupting the drive power.
The freedom of driving with the top down can be had at the touch of a button in the Porsche 911 Cabriolet. And the top of the 968 Cabriolet can also be opened in just a few steps - thanks to electrical support.
In Porsche's opinion, such a fundamental safety element as the anti-lock braking system (ABS) does not belong on the list of expensive special requests. Instead, it should be fitted as standard in every model. As is the high-performance braking system with four internally ventilated discs.
RDK is a standard component of the information and diagnostic system that controls all important vehicle functions on board a Porsche 928. If a tire loses air, the driver is immediately informed and can react immediately. For Porsche, safety is not just an equipment variant, but an important design principle.
The fact that Porsche has been developing future-oriented concepts for a long time is demonstrated, among other things, by the increased use of highly effective metal catalysts. Environmental responsibility in practice is also reflected in the research into alternative fuels that Porsche is currently carrying out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology.
The Porsche 911 Turbo embodies, like no other car, the absolute commitment to the purebred sports car. It stands for uncompromising engine and driving performance and is considered by many to be a synonym for driving pleasure. Can a car like this even be improved? You can. As the 911 Turbo has proven.
The breathtaking feeling of driving a Porsche 911 Turbo is difficult to convey with dry data. What does that mean: increase in performance from 220 kW (300 hp) to 235 kW (320 hp)? The decisive factor is how confidently the six-cylinder turbo engine develops this power.
And in all speed ranges. It reaches its maximum torque of 450 Newton meters at just 4500 rpm. And it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds. The 911 turbo engine owes this increase in performance to an enlarged turbocharger and intercooler and electronic map ignition.
In the Porsche 911 Turbo, one of the most modern catalytic converters in the world, a regulated three-way metal catalytic converter, ensures the best possible exhaust gas purification. Without compromising on performance, the 911 Turbo even meets the strict US standards. And proves that strength and reason do not have to be a contradiction.
As unmistakable as the 911 Turbo's performance is its design, with its softly rounded front section and the turbo-typical fender flares. Stylistic innovations such as the modified rubber lip on the rear spoiler and the wide tires on the 17-inch wheels benefit the roadholding and the appearance.
Like every Porsche production vehicle, the 911 Turbo also benefits from decades of experience in racing. After all, it's not enough to accelerate as quickly as possible, you also have to be able to brake effectively. The 911 Turbo has the shortest braking distance ever measured for a sports car: from 100 to 0 km/h in 2.8 seconds. Added to this is an improved chassis, the anti-lock braking system (ABS), standard power steering and airbags for the driver and front passenger in all series models. With a lot of active and passive safety, you can enjoy the strengths of your 911 Turbo even more consciously.
The new Porsche 928 GTS is firstly the fastest production sports car in Germany. And secondly one of the most beautiful sports cars in the whole world. Its representative elegance is emphasized even more strongly in the '92 model year - through a more pronounced, wider rear section, attractive 17-inch wheels and the new Porsche exterior mirrors.
This means that the powerful dynamics of the Porsche 928 GTS can also be experienced visually, long before it unfolds its fascination when driving.
With 250 kW (340 hp) from 5.4 l displacement, the revised engine of the 928 GTS achieves a torque of 500 Nm/4250 rpm and is particularly impressive due to its enormous power in the lower speed range. And because the 928 GTS has such enormous power potential at its disposal, it drives just as sportily in the automatic version as with the finely graduated five-speed manual transmission.
Speed and safety are inseparably linked at Porsche. The more power we give our sports cars, the more safety we build in. These include the internally ventilated high-performance brakes, which are even better in the new 928 GTS and have proven their durability in extreme racing conditions. The information and diagnostic system of the Porsche 928 GTS is also part of this. It informs the driver about every intervention by the lockable Porsche limited-slip differential PSD and shows him when there is a tire problem due to a drop in pressure.
Passive safety is ensured in all series models by airbags for the driver and front passenger, which Porsche is the first automobile manufacturer to offer.
So that you can experience the excitement and fascination that a Porsche exudes first hand, we would like to invite you to a test drive.
